MMA vs Karate which is the better?

Let`s go back to the 1980s and 1990s, when kickboxing was gaining popularity, many karate, kung fu, and tae kwon do institutions morphed into kickboxing ones. With the rise in popularity of mixed martial arts, I’ve seen that many traditional institutions are rebranding themselves as MMA schools or at least introducing MMA courses.

However, there are still teachers and dojos that take great pride in the traditions of their martial art and have no plans to relinquish such practices. The question is, what do the old guard gurus think about mixed martial arts? Do they disagree with it? Is the rising popularity of MMA seen as a danger to their discipline? Can you really use historical martial arts in a fight?

Just what are mixed martial arts? How about Mixed Martial Arts?

Although mixed martial arts (MMA) incorporates several techniques used in other martial art forms, it is not technically a martial art.

Some aspects of martial arts like Karate and others are missing from Mixed Martial Arts. Martial arts are more than simply a collection of moves you learn; they also have a philosophical dimension. Along with the physical activities come mental exercises like discipline and concentration.

Over time, individuals searching for a means of self-defense gave rise to martial arts such as Karate, Tae Kwon Do, and others.

Various martial styles, including Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, Muay Thai, and Kung Fu, have all contributed to the development of modern mixed martial arts. Many mixed martial artists transition into the sport from another martial art. As a result, Karateka who transition into MMA will bring Karate to the sport.

MMA vs Karate

One individual was dissatisfied with the decision to legalize mixed martial arts in Vancouver and made his feelings known in the local press. Aikido expert Joel Posluns has a sixth-degree black belt. I refrained from making any hasty judgments about him after seeing his interview on a local TV station in which he expressed disdain for mixed martial arts. Instead, I visited him at school and had a lengthy conversation with him about his viewpoint.

He wasn’t against the mixed martial arts notion and was as courteous and modest as I would have hoped from a true martial arts teacher. He has great respect for mixed martial artists and thinks the two styles can coexist. He has been successfully operating his school for three years, and it is located directly next to one of the largest Kickboxing and MMA schools in all of Canada.

Master Posluns is worried about the sport’s reputation, which has taken a hit because of the antics of certain fighters and their bad behavior on programs like “The Ultimate Fighter.”

Comparison between Karate and Mixed Martial Arts

At this point, you should have a rough concept of the broad distinction between Karate and MMA, so let’s dive into the details.

Sources That Aren’t the Same

Karate was created by ordinary Okinawan farmers. Because their Samurai masters had forbidden them to carry firearms, they were desperate to find another means to protect themselves.

Mixed martial arts have their roots in Ancient Greece, the same country that created the Olympic Games. The Greeks were known for their full-contact contests known as Pankration.

The sport’s popularity declined over time, but it made a rebirth in the 20th century in the shape of contemporary mixed martial arts. So, now that you have a high-level understanding of the primary distinction between Karate and MMA, let’s go further.

The ancient Greeks, who created the Olympic Games, are also the progenitors of mixed martial arts. The Greeks had popular full-contact tournaments called Pankration. As time went on, interest in the sport dwindled, but in the 20th century, mixed martial arts (MMA) helped revive it.

Variable Methods

Only the hands and feet are used for striking in traditional Karate methods. Techniques need careful and methodical execution with a focus on control.

Mixed martial arts (MMA) draw from a wide range of martial art traditions to integrate striking, grabbing, taking down, throwing, grappling, and other techniques.

MMA and Karate are Olympic sports.

Finally, in August of 2021, karate made its long-awaited Olympic debut at the Tokyo 2020 Games. Unfortunately, it was unexpectedly cut from the Paris Olympics in 2024.

Even though mixed martial arts (MMA) were created by the same individuals who created the Olympics, it has never been included in the Olympics. That MMA is excessively violent is often given as an explanation.
